Panchayat elections: Election Commission wants to start nomination from September 20, waiting for permission from CM

The future of three-tier panchayat elections is currently hanging in CM’s court. The government is yet to take a decision on the proposed election schedule of the State Election Commission. According to sources, the program which has been sent to the government at the Election Commission level intends to start the nomination process from September 20.

It is the system for panchayat elections that when the government agrees to the proposed program, only then the matter of elections will proceed. The Commission has already sent the proposed election schedule to the government last week.

After the strict stand of the High Court, the government has assured that all types of panchayat elections will be held by 30 November 2019. Panchayats are divided into three levels. Elections are to be held for Gram Panchayat, Kshetra Panchayat, and Zilla Panchayat. Presently, administrators are deployed in all these places.

The Election Commission wants to conduct elections for these three panchayats in three phases by 20 October. After this, the election number of the area panchayat chief and the presidents of the district panchayats will come. The government must decide their reservation before the election of district panchayat presidents.

Amidst these conditions, it is not clear how much the government agreed on the proposed election schedule of the State Election Commission. In this case, different kinds of things are coming out in political circles. There is no dearth of people to say that the government does not want elections too soon. In such a situation, this question is in its place that it will be appropriate for the government to turn away from the strict stand of the High Court and the assurance given there.

On the other hand, till the government takes a decision on the proposed election schedule, the State Election Commission is busy in speeding up the work of the voter list in Almora and parts of Udham Singh Nagar district. In some areas of these districts, due to the decisions of the government at the last moment, the mathematics of delimitation is disturbed. Its effect has also reached the voter list.
