BUDDHA TEMPLE, DEHRADUN

Established in 1676 by RigzinTerdakLingpa, re-established in Dehradun in 1965, by Khochhen Rinpoche with a group of monks, is also known as the Mind Rolling Monastery. It is one of the six major monasteries of the Nyingma School of Buddhism of Tibet. Buddha Temple, Dehradun is one of the biggest Buddhism centers in India.

The premises of Buddha Temple, Dehradun has big gardens, The Stupa, and the NgagyurNyingma College which offers advanced studies for monks to pass it to the future generations and to preserve the Tibetan Culture. The Stupa in this premises is the tallest Stupa in Asia, which is covered by lush green gardens from all the sides. With various beautiful shrine rooms, and decorated with Tibetan arts and Murals dedicated to Buddhism, it is an attraction for thousands from all over India and the world. Buddha Temple, Dehradun has a unique Japanese style architecture. It is believed that around 50 artists were involved in the designing of this remarkable temple and paintings. Buddha Temple, Dehradun took around three years to completion, has five floors that treasure the idols of Lord Buddha and beautiful gold color wall paintings with intricate works. Along with the 220 feet high Stupa, this premises also has a 130 feet high statue of Lord Buddha. The fourth floor of the building of the Stupa, which is mainly accessible on Sundays, has an open-air observation platform that gives the viewers an enchanting 360-degree view of the Dehradun Valley.

The Nyingma School of Tibetan Buddhism is also known as The School of Great Perfection and is the oldest school. There were six “mother” monasteries that were built in Tibet and dedicated to Nyingmapa practice. These were Kathok Monastery, ThuptenDorjeDrak Monastery, UgyenMindrolling Monastery, PalyulNamgyalJangchup Ling Monastery, DzogchenUgyenSamtenChooling Monastery, and ZhenchenTenyiDhargye Ling Monastery.

Due to the Chinese invasion of Tibet and the 1959 uprising, the heads of many Nyingmapa lineages left Tibet. The Monastic traditions that were re-established in India included ThekchokNamdrolShedrubDargye Ling in Bylakuppe, Karnataka State, Dehradun; PalyulChokhor Ling, E-VamGyurmed Ling, NechungDrayang Ling, Thubten E-yam Doriet Drag in Himachal Pradesh. and the NgedonGatsal Ling in Clemen Town.
Many of the monasteries that were established in Tibet were destroyed either in 1959, during the communist invasion of Tibet, or later at the time of the Cultural Revolution. With the help of the devoted local Tibetans and support from the Buddhist communities in China, most of it was rebuilt either partially or completely. The masters from these monasteries now preserve and train younger generations of lamas and reincarnate the masters after establishing their exile seats in India, Nepal, and Bhutan.
His Holiness the MindrollingTrichenRinpoche, is the present head of the Nyingma lineage and he has established and he has established the Mindrolling Monastery in Clement Town, Dehradun, India.
